Romeo and Juliet: Act 2, Scene 6

Advice from the character Friar Laurence to Romeo. Below is the full quote.

These violent delights have violent ends
And in their triumph die, like fire and powder,
Which as they kiss consume. The sweetest honey
Is loathsome in his own deliciousness
And in the taste confounds the appetite.
Therefore love moderately; long love doth so;
Too swift arrives as tardy as too slow.

Friar Laurence is a Fransican Monk who is friendly toward, and offers advice to both Romeo and Juliet. He marries the lovers both because they desire it, but more because he thinks it will heal the rift between the two families. In his effort to be moderate he innadvertently sets the tragedy on the road to its sad end.
